TOKYO: An earthquake of preliminary magnitude 5.2 shook the Tohoko region on Monday, registering a seismic intensity of 4 in Ibaraki, Fukushima and Tochigi Prefecture northwest of Tokyo, with no immediate reports of serious damage.

The Japan metrological agency there are no fears of a tsunami following the earthquake.

Central Tokyo experienced slight shakes at the scale of 3 shindo of the Japanese scale.

The epicentre of the quake was in the Ibaraki prefecture north of Tokyo at a depth of about 60 km.

Some areas in those preferctures and the surounding regions registered a seismic intensity of 3.

The Tokyo area is particularly susceptible to earthquakes as it is near the meeting point of three tectonic plates.
