TOKYO: Demonstrators, accompanied by their lawyers, protested outside the Tokyo District Court on Monday to protest the electoral disparity between constituencies which is contrary to the spirit of the Japanese constitution.

Carrying signs with the name of the constituencies and their equivalence in voters, the demonstrators traveled 100 meters before entering the court.  Two mascots, one carrying a fictitious ballot box, walked to the court.

Under the Japanese constitution, one person should equal one vote and this should be the same across the country. In many Japanese electoral districts, one vote equals between 0.5 and 0.9 voters. Only the electoral district of Tottori meets the equivalency outlined in the constitution.

The protesters are demanding that the Supreme Court rules on each individual case.
