TOKYO: Japan's government decided at a cabinet meeting on Friday to designate two typhoons which hit the country in October, and another, more powerful Typhoon Hagibis collectively as an extremely severe disaster.

Hagibis, the 19th typhoon of the year, which tore through Japan in mid-October, has already been designated as a disaster with extreme severity.

For the designation of the other two, Typhoon Neoguri and Typhoon Bualoi, the 20th and 21st typhoons of the season, the government revised a relevant ordinance.

The revised ordinance will go into effect on Wednesday.

The designation will increase state financial aid for local governments' reconstruction work for damaged facilities and infrastructure, such as roads, riverbanks and farmland.

"We want affected local communities to work on recovery efforts without worrying about costs," disaster management minister Ryota Takeda told a press conference on Friday.

As a special measure under the revised ordinance, the central and prefectural governments will cover 90 pct of costs for work to remove floodwater caused by the typhoons from farmland.

According to a central government tally, a total of 98 people died in the typhoons, and three others remain missing. More than 20,000 houses were destroyed or heavily damaged.
