TOKYO: Japan is one of the most earthquake prone countries on Earth and on Saturday and Sunday more than 100 quakes hit the area around the islands of Tokara in southwest Japan off the coast of its southern island Kyushu.

The largest quake was 4.8 magnitude and registered as a 4 on Japan’s intensity scale and this has disrupted the main island’s water supply.

There are several active volcanoes in the region and increased seismic activity could cause a major eruption. Japan’s most active volcano, Sakurajima, is in nearby Kagoshima Prefecture.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency is monitoring the quakes and urging residents to take precautions.
