TOKYO: Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida expressed an eagerness Monday to visit the United States next month for talks with US President Joe Biden.

“I want to travel to the United States to realize a summit meeting,” Kishida told reporters.

Kishida said he is also considering a visit to Australia in January. But he added, “Nothing has been decided yet.”

On a nuclear nonproliferation treaty review conference in New York in January, Kishida said he is considering delivering a video speech at the meeting rather than attending it in person.

“The COVID-19 situation is severe in New York. More and more nations are going virtual,” Kishida said of the meeting.

“I’m considering how I should participate in the conference, including through video,” Kishida said.
