TOKYO: US Ambassador to Japan Emanuel Rahm arrived at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport on Sunday, the US Embassy said in a statement.
The Ambassador was accompanied by his wife, Amy Rule.
The embassy said that a statement from Rahm at the airport, usual for a newly arrived ambassador, was not possible due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Ambassador Rahm plans to release a video message to the people of Japan in the coming days, the embassy said.
Rahm arrives at a time when tensions between Japan and its neighbors China and North Korea are increasing, and he will also be hoping to repair the relationship between his new hosts and South Korea, two key economic powers.
In his confirmation hearing, Rahm was also tasked with ensuring former Nissan Executive Greg Kelly returns home quickly as his trial in Japan nears its end.
