Japan’s daily COVID count cases top 60,000 for first time

TOKYO: Japan’s daily count of new coronavirus cases stood at 62,599 on Tuesday, exceeding 60,000 for the first time.

In Tokyo, the daily number came to 12,813, topping Saturday’s 11,227 to mark a new record daily high. Tuesday’s count was up 2.5-fold from the week-before level

The occupancy rate of hospital beds for novel coronavirus patients stood at 39.8 pct, up 3.1 percentage points from Monday, according to the Tokyo metropolitan government.

Severely ill COVID-19 patients counted under Tokyo’s own criteria increased by two from Monday to 14.

Osaka Prefecture logged a record 8,612 positive cases Tuesday, exceeding 6,000 for the first time. Ten fatalities were reported in the western prefecture.
