Japanese supercomputer shows transmission risk of Omicron remains high even with mask

TOKYO: Japanese research institute RIKEN has announced the results of a study about the risk of infection from the Omicron coronavirus variant using the supercomputer FUGAKU.

According to the results that were published by Japanese local media, the transmission risk remains high in those who wear a mask if they are located within 50 centimeters of the infected individual.

The study, which was conducted at a research facility in Kobe city, reaffirms the need to social distance by staying atleast one meter away from other people.

In addition, the results indicate the importance of good ventilation and partitions to separate people in public places such as restaurants.
