TOKYO: Many Japanese gathered at the historic Meiji Shrine in central Tokyo on Friday to celebrate Japan’s National Foundation Day, which was established definitively in 1966.

After being purified, about 50 Shinto priests passed under a gateway that marks the passage from the corporeal world to a sacred area.

Japan’s Foundation Day celebrates the enthronement of the first Japanese Emperor Jinmu, whose reign is said to have begun in 660 BC.

Outside the shrine, a parade with mikoshi portable shrines proceeded from the famed shopping street Ometesando Avenue to the entrance of the

Meiji Jingu Shrine.

The organizer of the gathering regretted that this year’s events were held in the shadow of the pandemic, which forced the mikoshi to be transported by vehicles instead of being carried by men. He hoped that next year a more beautiful festival could take place.

In the morning, several nationalist groups gathered in front main part of the shrine, including influential political group Nippon Kaigi, whose followers carried sacred branches and were dressed in traditional clothes bearing the image of the Japanese flag.

February 11 coincides with the first modern Japanese constitution established under Emperor Meiji at the end of the 19th century, was intended to hand sovereign powers to the Emperor as head of the nation and armies.
