TOKYO: Japanese Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio and Lt. Gen. Hun Manet, commander of the Royal Cambodian Army, confirmed on Wednesday that the two Asian countries will beef up defense cooperation.

With this year marking the 30th anniversary of Japan’s dispatch of Self-Defense Forces troops to Cambodia under a UN peacekeeping operation, Kishida said that he hopes to further boost defense ties between the two nations.

Expressing his hope to strengthen such ties, the Cambodian army chief voiced support for Japan’s vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific.

The two met at the prime minister’s office in Tokyo.

The eldest son of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, Hun Manet was named in December last year as a candidate to succeed his father.
