TOKYO: The Japanese Defense Ministry launched a new unit Thursday to respond more efficiently to cyberattacks on the agency.

The new 540-personnel unit brought together cybersecurity teams from the Ground, Maritime and Air Self-Defense Forces to defend a common computer network used by the ministry and the SDF.

“The threat of a cyberattack is becoming more sophisticated every day,” Defense Minister KISHI Nobuo said at an inaugural ceremony. “I want you to take up missions with awareness and pride as the unit on the front line in the cyber domain.”

Computer networks are the foundation of military command and control, and cyberattacks on such infrastructure have become common in modern warfare.
