Earthquakes continue in North East, Central Japan

TOKYO: A magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck Ibaraki prefecture that neighbors Tokyo at the Pacific Ocean around 4:27 pm on April 2, according to Japan’s Meteorological Agency.

The depth of the epicenter of this quake was about 60 km underground at the northern part of Ibaraki, the agency said.

Eyewitnesses in the capital of Tokyo said they felt weak and short sway caused by the Saturday temblor.

Seismic intensities 4 and higher were observed in Ibaraki and surrounding prefectures, including Tokyo recently.

The number of earthquakes in the past week reached five, including 2 with a seismic intensity of 4 or higher. On March 31, in the northwestern part of Chiba prefecture (M4.7) and the southern part of Kyoto prefecture (M4.3).

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, earthquakes with a seismic intensity of 1 or higher have been observed 48 times.
