Kanto region hit by an earthquake, Tokyo buildings mildly swayed

TOKYO: A moderately strong earthquake with seismic intensity of 4 hit on May 5 three prefectures in the Kanto region that is facing the Pacific Ocean but caused no tsunami, Japan Metrological Agency reported on Thursday.  

The epicenter of the earthquake, that struck at 18:42 local time, was in the southern Ibaraki prefecture north east of Tokyo, at a depth of 40 km with a magnitude of 4.8, the agency said. No damage or injuries have been reported so far, local media said.

Seismic intensity of 3 was observed in the surrounding prefectures including Fukushima, Saitama and Chiba. 

Tokyo metropolis, Kanagawa, Miyagi, Yamanashi and Nagano observed seismic intensity of 2. 

Seismic intensity 4 impact awaken some sleeping people, hanging objects swing and cupboard dishes rattle. Furthermore, unsecured objects topple and loud noises heard. Power lines sway and most building shake.
