TOKYO: An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter Scale occurred in eastern Japan on Sunday. The epicenter of the quake was in Ibaraki Prefecture to the northeast of Tokyo.
The quake hit at 5:29 p.m. near the junction of three prefectures: Ibaraki, Chiba and Saitama, and had a seismic intensity of three in many areas.
It struck at a depth of 40 km and was felt strongly – 3 on Japan’s seismic scale – in the large cities of Mito and Utsunomiya.
The quake was spread over a large area, including Tokyo and some of its surrounding prefectures. There was no danger of a tsunami. Some high rise buildings in the Japanese capital slightly swayed.
