TOKYO: An earthquake with a maximum seismic intensity of 4 struck off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture in northeastern Japan on Thursday morning.
The quake was felt in most of eastern and northeastern Japan. A similar quake struck off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture a day earlier. In both cases, there was no danger of a tsunami and there were no reports of damage to the Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant that was destroyed 11 years ago after a tsunami.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter was off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture at a depth of about 60km. It was estimated to have a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter Scale.
Shaking with a seismic intensity ranging from one to three was felt of a wide area, including the Tokyo area and northern Japan.
The mechanism of this earthquake is thought to be a reverse fault type earthquake with a pressure axis in the northeast-southwest direction.
It was the first earthquake with a seismic intensity of 4 or higher in the area since April 6.
