Japan’s cumulative COVID-19 cases top 15m

TOKYO: Japan’s cumulative novel coronavirus infection cases topped 15 million Thursday.

On the day, new COVID-19 cases totaled some 240,000 around the country, with the daily count surpassing 200,000 for the third consecutive day.

In Tokyo, 31,247 people were confirmed to be infected with the coronavirus Thursday, down by 4,092 from a week before.

New fatalities linked to COVID-19 totaled 22 in the Japanese capital, according to the Tokyo metropolitan government.

The seven-day average of new infection cases in Tokyo fell 9.3 pct week on week to 29,648.4. The number of COVID-19 patients with severe symptoms under the capital’s criteria stood at 40, unchanged from Wednesday.
