
TOKYO: About 41 percent of people in Japan are opposed to building new nuclear power plants in the country, a Jiji Press opinion poll showed.
The survey, conducted in a four-day period through Monday, showed that 41.5 percent of respondents oppose such a move while 30.9 percent are in favor. It showed that 27.5 percent said they have no opinion on the matter.
Of respondents who support the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, 45.5 percent favor building new nuclear plants, while 34.3 percent oppose such an idea.
Only 14.3 percent of respondents who support the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan are in favor of the idea, while 65.3 percent are against.
Of respondents who do not support a particular political party, 42.1 percent are against the idea, while 26.9 percent support it.
The survey was based on interviews with 2,000 people aged 18 or older across Japan, with valid answers collected from 61.9 percent of them.
