TOKYO: Following a 7.2 magnitude earthquake near the east coast of Taiwan on Sunday afternoon, tsunami warnings came into effect for Japan’s southern islands.

The quake struck inland near the southeastern corner of Taiwan. The depth was reportedly “very shallow,” which is usually an indication that the seismic intensity is likely to be very strong and there is a likelihood of considerable damage.

Unconfirmed reports say that buildings and bridges in Taiwan have suffered damage.

A number of earthquakes have hit the area in the last couple of days, including a 6.4 quake on Saturday that registered a seismic intensity of 6+.

The quake was felt lightly in the southern Japanese prefecture of Okinawa and a tsunami alert was issued with a possible height of around 1 meter, which can cause damage to coastal areas.
