TOKYO: A small crowd of supporters cheered as the Emperor of Japan as he entered and left the Japanese Parliament on Monday.
To the sound of “Banzai” (“Long live the Emperor!”), the supporters unfurled banners and waved Japanese flags as the Imperial convoy passed by.
Fans then listened to Emperor Naruhito’s speech to the parliamentarians through smartphones, which transmitted the speech in real time.
After about 20 minutes the convoy came out and the supporters again cheered for the Emperor.
The extraordinary session of the Diet opened amid a crisis among parliamentarians, including Representative Hiroyuki Hosoda who has maintained relations with the controversial Unification Church.
The rise in consumer prices due to inflation is also on parliament’s agenda.
