TOKYO: Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio spoke at the opening of the G1 Global Summit in Tokyo on Monday and praised it as a forum for looking forward to a better future.

G1 sets itself out as “a forum for the leaders of the next generation to gather, discuss, and paint a vision for the rebirth of Japan in a turbulent world.”

Kishida said: “I am glad that G1 members have held discussions to improve Japan and are acting boldly in response to the G1 spirit of suggestion and action rather than criticism. The key to economic revitalization is the realization of new capitalism. I would like to realize a sustainable economic and social society through a virtuous cycle of growth and distribution, and lead the global movement for economic and social change.”

“Japan can do this. Let’s work together to challenge such an economic and social transformation. G1 members, why don’t we all work together to create a new post-corona Japan.”

The G1 Summit brings people from the same generation who are active at the forefront of politics, the economy, business, science, technology and culture to discuss contemporary issues.

This year’s G1 Global theme is “Roaring Twenties 2.0! Crafting a Grand Design for a Post-COVID World.” The idea is to mirror the 1920s, which was a decade of economic growth, advances in new technologies and personal freedoms, and a renaissance in art and culture. It also emerged from a pandemic and a world war.

The 2020s face similar, but more complex challenges: recovery from COVID-19, a war in Ukraine, an energy and supply-chain crisis, economic stagnation, and threats to the environment.

G1’s founders “believe that Japan and the world need leadership that is backed by wisdom, well-rounded knowledge, ambition, and a network of close associates. The purpose of G1 is to gather leaders and create such a network.”
