TOKYO: People suffering from the effects of air pollution have launched a lawsuit to demand that Japan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare pay their medical bills.
On Wednesday, about 50 Japanese from different regions of the country gathered in front of the Ministry tried to obtain financial aid which will allow them to receive adequate medical treatment.
As association of victims, which includes asthma sufferers, claim damage from diesel engines and is seeking mediation between the state, automobile manufacturers and patients.
According to one of the organizers of the demonstration, the problem is one of a historical nature. While the air in Tokyo and other cities has improved over the years, historical problems still affect people of the older generation who must bear the bulk of their medical expenses.
It’s been reported that negotiations have taken place with Toyota, which, the association says, increased the levels of pollution by accelerating the production of diesel-powered vehicles. The victims say the government failed to take measures to regulate CO2 emissions.
A judgement was made 15 years ago that said the state was not responsible, leading to negotiations for a settlement with the Regulation and Conciliation Commission.
