Tokyo: Japanese industry minister Yasutoshi Nishimura called on the Japan Business Federation, or Keidanren, on Monday to raise wages aggressively in next year’s “shunto” spring labor-management wage talks.
“We expect bold, drastic decisions to be made for further pay hikes and income increases,” Nishimura told Masakazu Tokura, chairman of Keidanren, the country’s biggest business group, at their meeting in Tokyo.
The government hopes that labor and management will agree on wage hikes that can cover rising prices.
The business world is making the “utmost efforts” toward such hikes, Tokura said while pointing to the need to “carefully consider the level of burdens on companies and the timing.”
