Tokyo: Japanese Justice Minister Ken Saito said Monday that abolishing the country’s death penalty would not be appropriate.
“A majority of the public believes that the death penalty can’t be avoided for extremely vicious and heinous crimes,” Saito told a parliamentary committee meeting.
“Given that murders of many people continue to occur, imposing the death penalty on perpetrators of extremely serious crimes is unavoidable,” he said.
Japan’s capital punishment has been the subject of persistent international criticism. A working group of the U.N.
Human Rights Council adopted a report this month that included a recommendation from member countries that called on Japan to scrap the punishment.
