Moderately strong earthquake hits Fukushima and Ibaraki prefectures

TOKYO: A moderately strong earthquake with a maximum seismic intensity of 4 struck Fukushima, Ibaraki, and Tochigi prefectures around 4:25 pm on March 24.

Japan’s metrological agency reported that there was no tsunami from this earthquake. Fukushima and Ibaraki are located directly on the Pacific Ocean in the Kanto region, which includes other prefectures. There was no impact in the Tokyo metropolitan area, according to reports.

The agency reported that the epicenter was in the northern part of Ibaraki Prefecture, with a depth of 80 kilometers and an estimated magnitude of 4.7. The maximum seismic intensity of 4 was observed in many cities and towns in the area, but no damage has been reported. Less seismic intensity is observed in other parts of the region close to Tokyo.

National TV Network, NHK, quoted the Ibaraki Prefectural Nuclear Safety Division officials as saying there were no abnormalities at nuclear-related facilities in Ibaraki Prefecture.  

“Currently, there is no abnormality in the values ​​of the monitoring posts that measure the radiation dose around the Tokai nuclear power plant, so we will continue to collect information and confirm the earthquake’s impact,” officials reportedly said.
