
TOKYO: An earthquake with a maximum seismic intensity of upper 5 jolted Chiba prefecture around 4:16 on Thursday but caused no tsunami, Japan Meteorological Agency said.
The epicenter of the quake was in southern Chiba Prefecture under the Boso Peninsula near the city of Kisarazu, with an epicenter depth of about 40km and an estimated magnitude of 5.4. No reports of injury or building damage been made according to Kisarazu police.
A seismic intensity of 5-lower was observed in the southern Boso peninsula and seismic intensities of 2 to 4 were observed in districts next to Tokyo Bay in Chiba, Tokyo and Yokohama.
The remainder of the Southern Kanto region largely experienced seismic intensities of 2 and 3.
Kisarazu is a popular costal town for swimming and surfing during summer.
