TOKYO: Executives from Tokyo Electric Power Company were represented in court again this week to appeal against a High Court ruling that held them liable for the consequences of the explosive destruction of the company’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
Only the lawyers for the five executives showed up to appeal against the nearly $100 billion fine levied against them a year ago for failing to take appropriate measures to safeguard the plant in the event of a tsunami. The 2011 tsunami destroyed the plant after its backup generators were flooded.
No money has yet been paid to the plaintiffs, who are expected to take their appeals to Japan’s Supreme Court.
The lawyers for the defendants partly denied the responsibility of their clients on the grounds that they were not aware of the measures required to be taken, despite meetings in which it was recommended raising the anti-tsunami wall near the plant.
One of the plaintiffs recalled the suffering he endured following the nuclear disaster and the court was reminded of the deaths that occurred in the chaos after the tsunami.
