TOKYO: YAMADA Kenji, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, hailed relations between the two countries on Friday while attending a National Day Reception to celebrate the 52nd National Foundation Day of the Sultanate of Oman hosted by Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Said Al-Busaidi,

“On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to His Majesty Sultan Haitham, Foreign Minister of the Sultanate of Oman Sayyid Badr, Ambassador Al Busaidi, the people of Oman and all those present,” he said.

Yamada noted that Japan and Oman are also celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, and exchanges between the two countries have become more active as the danger of COVID-19 wanes.

“Former Foreign Minister Abdullah Alawi visited Japan for the Spring Conferment of Decorations on Foreign Nationals, and in September, Minister Al Aufi visited Japan,” Yamada said. “I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the presence of the advisor to the Ministry of Interior, Maashani, and Ambassador Al Busaidi at the State Funeral of the late former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.”

Yamada also recalled that a Japanese Noh play was performed at the Royal Opera House in Muscat and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Western Area Band gave its first overseas performance in Muscat.

“I hope that exchanges between our two countries will continue to be active in many areas, based on the history of friendship and cooperation over the last 50 years,” he concluded in his remarks.

Dr. Al-Busaidi, Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to Japan, welcomed the guests to the celebration.

“The history of exchanges between our two countries stretches back more than 400 years. On this occasion, I express my pride and happiness in celebrating the glorious National Day and the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.”

The ambassador mentioned how the Sultanate of Oman is implementing goals to restructure and modernize its administrative and economic apparatus and achieve financial stability, as well as carbon neutrality by 2050 with green energy a key element.

The Komeito Party’s YAMAGUCHI Natsuo commented on the importance of Oman’s oil and gas exports to Japan and thanked Oman for “providing supply bases for Maritime Self-Defense Force escort ships to ensure the safety of ships” in the seas near Oman and in the region. Komeito is partner with the Liberal Democratic Party of the ruling coalition.

In the reception, an exhibition showing Omani handcrafts was on display. A video on Oman tourism attraction was also in display for guests from the Japanese government, diplomats, academia and friends of Oman.
