RIYADH: Saudi Arabia urged the international community to assume its responsibilities in stopping military operations in Gaza and enabling relief organizations to deliver urgent humanitarian aid to civilians, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Tuesday.

The Saudi Cabinet said it was following up on the diplomatic efforts undertaken by the Kingdom in various arenas to find a just and comprehensive solution that meets the aspirations of the Palestinian people.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman briefed the Cabinet on his call with US President Joe Biden, where he affirmed the Kingdom’s stance toward developments in Gaza.

Israel is conducting a ground offensive in the Gaza Strip in its war with Hamas and on Tuesday attacked a refugee camp that resulted in the deaths of at least 50 civilians. So far over 8,500 Palestinians have been killed as a result of Israel’s military retaliation after Hamas’ attacks on settlements outside the enclave, which killed 1,400 Israelis.

The Saudi foreign ministry issued a statement denouncing the attack on the Jabalia camp, saying the Kingdom condemns the targeting of densely populated civilian areas by Israel’s military.

The Kingdom’s defense minister, Khalid bin Salman, travelled to the US on Monday to call for an ‘immediate’ ceasefire.

The head of the Muslim World League, Mohammed Al-Issa, also called on the international community to assume its responsibilities toward protecting civilians.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said: “I condemn the killing of civilians in Gaza and I am dismayed by reports that two-thirds of those who have been killed are women and children.”

The UN General Assembly on Friday adopted a resolution calling for a ceasefire, but the decision is nonbonding.

Israel has vowed to continue its military campaign until it destroys Hamas. But these actions have resulted in mass civilian deaths and accusations that Israel’s actions are aimed at collectively punishing the Palestinians.
