RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) was awarded the Japan Prize thanks to its efforts in changing marine ecosystems and blue carbon research.

KAUST biological oceanography and marine ecology Professor Carlos Duarte is among the recipients of the Japan Prize. His work in marine ecology has earned him international recognition, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Duarte will travel to Tokyo in April to receive the award from Japanese Emperor Naruhito.

Dr. Fahad bin Abdullah Toonsi, the university’s board of trustees’ secretary-general, said the achievement emphasized KAUST’s role in “enhancing global understanding of marine ecosystems,” and its commitment to Vision 2030.

The Japan Prize celebrates scientists whose contributions in science and tech also foster peace and prosperity.
