Saudi Arabia welcomed the Special Tribunal for Lebanon’s verdict to jail two Hezbollah members for life over the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri.

Saudi Arabia urged the international community to “practice its responsibilities towards the Lebanese people who face the terrorist practices of the Iranian-backed militias,” a statement published by the foreign ministry said on Friday.

The Kingdom also called for the implementation of international resolutions in Lebanon and the arrest of “murderers” who have been contributing to the loss of innocent lives and causing “unprecedented chaos” in Lebanon.

“Such terrorist practices have been putting Lebanon and its people in crisis over the past decades,” the statement said.

The 2005 bombing had killed 21 other people and injured 226.

The two men, Habib Merhi and Hussein Oneissi, were sentenced by the UN-backed court in absentia.
