TOKYO: A star-studded parade of directors and actors and actresses lit up the red carpet at Tokyo International Film Festival on Monday to celebrate an event that has been held every year for 36 years.

Some of the world’s top actresses and actors dressed in their elegant best in the spectacular event at the Midtown Building in central Tokyo.

This year’s film festival is commemorating the 120th anniversary of Japanese pioneer OZU Yasujiro and has named Wim Wenders as the President of the Jury. He will present his film “Perfect Days,” an award winner at the Cannes Film Festival, at the opening of the festival.

Among the stars at Monday’s event was YASHUKO Koji, who was named Best Actor at Cannes and who appears in Wenders’ film alongside TANAKA Min. Wenders will present two films out of competition, “Perfect Days” and his documentary on the German artist Anselm Kieffer.

Other foreign guests include the prolific French actor Benoit Magimel, who has a leading role in the film “Pot au Feu,” and German director Veit Helmeir, who will present his film “Gondola.”

As for the stars of Asian cinema, fans were delighted with the arrival of Hou Hsiao Sien, the father of Taiwanese auteur cinema. Hou is a great admirer of Ozu to whom he dedicated his film “Café Lumière,” which will be screened at the Tokyo Film Festival.

In this festival, 219 films will be screened from October 23 to November 1 in the Hibiya and Ginza districts.
