Japanese computer game character Sonic the Hedgehog’s movie premiered Feb. 14 in the UAE, bringing together fans of the cartoon.

Showing in the Dubai Mall, the movie was produced by Sega Sammy Group & Original Film with global distribution by Paramount Pictures. It stars the acclaimed actor Jim Carrey as “Dr.Robotnik”, James Marsden as “Tom Wachowski” and Sonic’s voice was done by Ben Schwartz.

The first Sonic game, released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis, was developed after Sega requested a new mascot character to replace Alex Kidd and compete with Nintendo's mascot Mario. Its success helped Sega become one of the leading video game companies during the 16-bit era of the early 1990s.

The premiere was packed with nostalgic fans who used to play Sonic the Hedgehog games through various gaming consoles over the years.

Fahad Durrani, one of many fans said: “I’m excited for the movie because I used to play Sonic games in my childhood, so growing up with the character and watching him on the big screen is really exciting. I’m a big fan of Jim Carrey as well”.

Another fan, Kenneth Abiad, said: “ I have been a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog since I was a kid and I’m really excited for this movie because Sonic is my favorite character from SEGA. My first Sonic game was “Sonic Adventure” on SEGA Dreamcast and I really loved that game very much”.

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie is available now through the Cinemas around the GCC region.
