Fans of the popular Gundam franchise were in for a treat after a hiatus of 18 years when Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom was finally released this year.

The movie earned US$32 million worldwide to become the highest-grossing film in the Gundam series.

The movie is directed by Mitsuo Fukuda, who also co-wrote the script along with his late wife Chiaki Morosawa and Liu Goto. Hisashi Hirai (Mobile Suit Gundam Seed) designed the characters.

The movie takes shape one year after the events of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny in Cosmic Era (C.E.) 75, where the fighting still continues.

There are independent movements and aggression by Blue Cosmos. In order to calm the situation, a global peace monitoring agency called COMPASS is established, with Lacus Clyne as its first president.

As members of COMPASS, Kira Yamato and his comrades intervene into various regional battles. Then a newly established nation called Foundation proposes a joint operation against a Blue Cosmos stronghold.

The C.E. is an era in which there are human beings called Coordinators, born with superior physical and mental abilities thanks to genetic modification, and humans called Naturals who are born naturally.

With their respective existence at stake, the ideological clash between Coordinators and Naturals escalated into war using armed force.

The movie highlights Kira’s struggles as he tries to be a self-righteous crusader since the beginning of the original series.

After an 18-year hiatus, the sequel to “Gundam SEED Destiny” anime series was worth the wait.

Lacus, who in her role as the president of COMPASS, is likewise struggling with the harsh nature of the world. She feels her previous actions have bound Kira to other characters such as Shinn Asuka, who struggles to find peace with the consequences of his previous anger led actions, provoked by the narcissistic Agnes and Athrun Zala, who’s role is truly remarkable and supportive through the movie.

The movie brings back various flashbacks from the previous two series and its effects on the events of the plot, which are refreshing and a treat for those who watched them in the past.

The animation of the movie features a big jump from the original series with the CGI animation element being used on the mobile suits, ships and some areas in the movie in as well the great details of the characters, backgrounds and during the epic battles that attract the audience to them.

The fight scenes are consistently entertaining and are bursting with energy, showing off just how good the animation is for the movie.

The return of the voice cast of the previous two series brings fun and excitement to the audience who have been fans of their characters for many along with the introduction of new characters in various dialogues and engagements that highlights their performances in various scenes in the movie.

The movie’s music score from the veteran Japanese composer Toshihiko Sahashi, which remarks his return to the series after his marvelous work on the music for the previous two series gives a splendid atmosphere and joy to the fans who enjoyed his music over many years especially with reprisals of classic themes mixed into some new music to add their distinctive sound to the mix.

Overall, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom is a wonderful treat and reunion special to the series fans who waited two decades to see their favorite characters and their mobile suits in a splendid way on the big screen with a ton of callbacks and surprises that bring fun and excitement to them.
