The ‘Spy × Family’ manga series launched in March 2019 and follows a spy, Loid Forger/ Twilight, who has to “build a family” to execute a mission, not realizing that his adopted daughter, Anya Forger, is a telepath, and the woman, Yor Forger/ Thorn Princess, he agrees to marry is a skilled assassin.

The series has become a popular phenomenon worldwide since then, selling over 35 million copies in circulation and the anime series getting a third season as well a movie titled “Spy x Family Code: White” that brings the unique family into an exciting and fun adventure to the big screen.

The movie received positive reviews and grossed over US$60 million worldwide.

The movie is directed by Takashi Katagiri, who directed season 2 of the anime with the series author Tatsuya Endo supervised the production and provided original character designs.

The events of the movie happens where Loid is told by his superior that mission Operation Strix is to be transferred to a new agent, meaning that the Forger family is no longer needed. To stay in charge of Operation Strix, Loid must prove that he and his fake family are the most fitting for the role.

In order to do that, the Forger family goes on vacation to an idyllic mountain village as Anya’s newest class assignment involves cooking a dessert, and if she bakes the best dessert, she’ll get a coveted Stella, the school’s premier academic prize. And since she needs as many Stellas as possible to secure a spot at an elite party, where her family can meet the prime minister, Loid decides the best strategy is to research the headmaster’s favorite dessert hands-on.

During the trip, Anya discovers a key, and through Bond’s visions, locates a suitcase on the train. Inside, for some reason, there is a single chocolate. While wondering, the owners of the suitcase return, and in her surprise, Anya accidentally swallows the chocolate. However, the chocolate hides a serious secret that could threaten world peace and just like that, a series of happenings occur on the journey!

The movie presents good threads about family and spending time with one another. Loid wants to handle everything by himself, but Yor insists that they need to do things together as a family, because that’s what will be important in the end.

Anya’s worried about Operation Strix falling apart and possibly losing her family because of it and that’s what the movie managed to bring especially in both hilarious and serious situations.

Loid’s stoicism mixed with his almost superhuman agility and intelligence is still a joy to watch when he uses it to overcome everyday mundane tasks. Yor’s bubbly and naive attitude is still a good counterpoint to how much of a deadly assassin she really is under that kind demeanor. Anya’s mischievous but kindhearted actions is also great to watch in the movie.

The movie’s animation is beautiful where Wit Studio and Clover Works, the main studios for the series, also did the animation for the movie with a few new tricks like some rotating camera angles and fast paced fights where the animators really flexed their skills.

Overall, Spy x Family Code: White is good, blending action, adventure, and humor while exploring the dual lives of an unusual family. The high-quality animation and engaging character development make it appealing to both genre enthusiasts and new viewers.
