DUBAI: TOKIWA, a group of UAE-based musicians specializing in traditional Japanese instrumentals, prepares to make its debut show on Oct. 12 at Dubai’s Theatre of Digital Art (TODA), titled “The Echoes of Japan,” where they have crafted a first-of-its-kind experience in the Middle East that transcends a regular musical performance, enhanced with a 360-degree visual spectacle of Japan’s majestic scenery that complements each note.

“The show is a transportive experience designed to connect people deeply with the spirit of Japanese music and culture. The show at TODA promises a unique encounter with music that has shaped centuries of tradition yet continues to evolve,” they shared.

The group was founded on the principle of bringing traditional Japanese music into a modern context through Japanese instruments such as shakuhachi, koto, and taiko. It consists of expert musicians from around the globe—Kyle from Lebanon/United States of America, James from the United Kingdom, Yuki, and Mai from Japan.

The musicians’ goal is to expand both the local UAE and global understanding and appreciation of Japanese musical heritage. “We are aiming to create immersive experiences that not only entertain but also educate audiences about the depth and beauty of Japanese culture” the group said.

“By doing so, we hope to foster a greater connection between Japan and the global community. Additionally, we are keen on collaborating with corporations and cultural institutions to bring private performances that can enhance cultural appreciation at corporate events and gatherings,” they added.

One of TOKIWA’s primary challenges has been navigating the logistical aspects of bringing traditional Japanese music into diverse international venues, ensuring that each performance resonates with both connoisseurs and those new to Japanese music.

Additionally, fostering a consistent interest in traditional arts in an era dominated by contemporary and digital media has been an invigorating challenge that pushes them to innovate continuously.

Tickets for TOKIWA’s debut show are on sale on TODA’s website.
