DUBAI: For the first time in the UAE, Dubai’s Zabeel Theatre hosts a musical adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’, bringing the classical Christmas tale to life.

Presented by Art For All and DXB Live, the show features iconic songs like “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch” and “Welcome Christmas,” as the Grinch discovers there’s more to Christmas than he bargained for.

Produced by Olivier Award-winning Paul Taylor-Mills, whose 2022 production of “Elf The Musical” was a sold-out success in Dubai, this new adaptation promises a unique and exciting holiday experience.

“We picked Dr. Seuss’ ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ because it’s such a classic, it’s never been to the UAE before, and the Grinch is a fun contrast to Elf, especially with the same actor playing both roles,” the producer told Arab News Japan.

“This adaptation stays true to the charm and humor of Dr. Seuss’ story, with stunning sets and costumes that bring his whimsical world to life. We’ve added our own flair, with a brilliant West End cast and touches tailored for UAE audiences,” he added.

Taylor-Mills shared that there were not many challenges he faced when adapating the musical in Dubai, as the UAE serves as a melting pot of cultures. “‘The Grinch’ is a beloved story around the world. Its themes of kindness, community, and the spirit of Christmas resonate universally. So, we knew it would connect with everyone here.”

“Dubai’s multicultural vibe played a big role in the creative process. The themes of ‘The Grinch’ are universal—kindness, community, and the joy of giving—which makes it resonate with audiences from all backgrounds. While we made sure the show is appropriate for the region, the core message remains the same: it’s for everyone, no matter where they’re from. We really respect Arab culture, and that respect is reflected in every aspect of the production,” the producer said.

Additionally, he shared that he believes that Dr. Seuss’ stories became popular in Japan because of their universal themes. “Dr. Seuss’ stories resonate across cultures. We had Japanese audiences at ‘Elf’ and it was amazing to see how much they connected with the show. I’m thrilled to bring The Grinch to Dubai and see people from all backgrounds, including Japanese fans, enjoying the magic of Seuss’ world once again.”

Published in 1957, Dr. Seuss’ ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ is a cherished children’s book that is loved worldwide. It was adapted into a TV animation in 1966, followed by a video game in 2000 and a 2018 animated film with English actor Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of the Grinch. The stage adaptation premiered in 1994.

The show is running until Dec. 24 and tickets are available on Platinumlist.
