DUBAI: After the internet flooded with AI-generated images in the style of Studio Ghibli over the last two weeks, CEO of UAE’s pop culture retail The Little Things, Hassan Tamimi, shared that AI cannot replace the passion that makes Ghibli’s work remarkable.
“We believe that technology should amplify human creativity, not replace it. Supporting original creators isn’t just good ethics; it’s what keeps the magic alive,” he said.
The images were generated using ChatGPT after OpenAI launched a new image generator in its newest update, GPT-4o, allowing users to recreate any image in Hayao Miyazaki’s distinctive style. The generated images created a debate online regarding the usage of AI and copyright.
“While AI is a powerful tool, it cannot replicate the soul, imperfections, and passion that make Ghibli’s work so extraordinary,” Tamimi said.
“Every brushstroke by their artists carries meaning, built from years of experience and an intimate connection to their craft, something no algorithm can truly capture. For generations, it has offered audiences eternal tales crafted by human hands; Ghibli’s creative legacy continues,” he added.
The CEO shared that The Little Things proudly celebrates the work of real artists with their products.
“We celebrate the craftsmanship and storytelling that define the world of anime, collectibles, and pop culture. Studio Ghibli’s legacy is built on decades of artistry, where every frame reflects human creativity, emotion, and dedication,” he reflected.
He added, “It has remained our constant dedication to supporting original creators through officially licensed merchandise. Every genuine purchase is a tribute to their hard work, helping their stories live on and making fans feel good about choosing authenticity.”
After the Ghibli-generated images went viral, an old video from 2016 of Miyazaki reacting to AI-generated animation resurfaced where he heavily opposed it.
“I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself,” Miyazaki said in the clip. “I can’t watch this stuff and find it interesting. Whoever creates this stuff has no idea what pain is whatsoever. I’m utterly disgusted.”
