As protests erupt around the world in the wake of George Floyd’s death at the hands of the Minneapolis Police Department, Japanese brands have united in a tangible act supporting the Black Lives Matter movement.
Twenty brands including, AMBUSH, Bedwin And the Heartbreakers, Bounty Hunter, Human Made, HYKE, Hysteric Glamour, Neighborhood, Nonnative, WTAPS, White Mountaineering, Kolor, Sacai, Wacko Maria, as well as others, have collectively found a creative way to engage their communities and divert necessary funds to organizations fighting racial injustices through the creation of a special product to source funding.
The resulting product is white T-shirt with striking black text on the front that reads “JAPANESE SOLIDARITY WITH BLACK LIVES MATTER.”
In a message of solidarity, the logos of all the brands that have collaborated to support the Black Lives Matter movement are listed across the back of the T-shirt.
The design seeks to raise awareness on racial injustice and the dehumanization of people of color, as well as to raise contributions in Japan, through the promotion of their solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.
The T-Shirt is set to be available for purchase online in Japan and the United States.
Pre-orders for addresses in Japan will be available from June 20 to June 22 on Human Made’s website, and pre-orders for addresses in the United States will be available from June 19 to June 21 on Billionaire Boys Club’s website.
While many brands have issued Instagram statements, posts, and shared educational resources, these Japanese brands are offering more than just performative support by using their platforms to engage their client-bases to furthering the Black Lives Matter movement and contributng funds to organizations fighting racial injustice.
