TOKYO: Japan and the rest of the world may be going through a social and economic shock at the moment, but the art world in Tokyo is bouncing back with its annual art fair and some healthy business.

“At this moment, sales are very good, so we are expecting a very positive outcome,” spokesman Naohiko Kishi told Arab News Japan.

Art Fair Tokyo is the largest art fair in Japan and the oldest in Asia, featuring a wide range of art from antiques and crafts to nihonga painting and contemporary art. The fair continues to evolve and expand as a platform for the art market, connecting past and present, Asia and the West, and presenting historically inspired artistic contexts.

“Art Fair Tokyo was cancelled last year and up to July the whole market was in decline,” Kishi said. “But since August, the market started increasing and things really picked up after October.”

Art Fair Tokyo’s history goes back to Nippon International Contemporary Art Fair (NICAF), which started in 1992 at Pacifico Yokohama as the first major contemporary art fair in Asia. NICAF struggled in Japan’s then inhospitable economic climate and was held for the eighth and final time in 2003.

In 2005, the event relaunched as Art Fair Tokyo. At its annual venue of Tokyo International Forum, the fair includes exhibits presented by a uniquely wide range of galleries and dealers, encompassing everything from antiques to contemporary art.

Art Fair Tokyo 2021 took place from March 19 to 21 this year and featured a total 141 of gallery and art organization exhibitors, including nine from overseas.

It will be followed up with “Art Stage Osaka” in Japan’s second city in May.
