TOKYO: A longer version of the film examining the background of the man who is believed to have murdered former Prime Minister ABE Shinzo will be released in the new year.

“Revolution + 1” was made shortly after the assassination of Abe by ADACHI Masao, a former member of the Japanese Red Army. It discusses the complex psychology of the killer of the Prime Minister.

A large part of the film is said to have been based on details from the confession that YAMAGAMI Tetsuya gave to the police, as well as research by sociologists that showed the involvement of the Unification Church cult and its relations with the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

The lead role is played by TAMOTO Soran. In the movie, the name of the killer has been changed to Kawakami.

Yamagami’s mother is a devoted member of the cult and has been blamed for ruining her family’s life and the future of her son by donating her wealth to the cult. This was deeply resented by the protagonist, who held a grudge against Abe for his apparent support of the cult.

Director Adachi, who was convicted in Japan for his association with the Popular Front of Liberation of Palestine and the Japanese Red Army, produced “Revolution + 1” initially as a statement of opposition to the state funeral of Abe.

The film was screened in a shortened 50-minute version in several cities across Japan on the eve of Shinzo Abe’s funeral. The 75-minute version will be released next year and it is planned to show it at the Berlin Film Festival.
