TOKYO: The 40 shareholders who won a lawsuit against Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) have requested that the judgment fine of $95 billion against three former executives be confirmed on appeal.

The three former executives were ordered to pay the heaviest fine ever handed down by a court in Japan due to their culpability for the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

After a long trial during which the prosecutors, the lawyers of the plaintiffs and the accused went to the scene of the nuclear disaster to observe and verify the evidence put forward by the plaintiffs, Judge KINO will render the final verdict in November of this year.

On Wednesday, the two parties met through their lawyers at the Tokyo High Court. The purpose of this hearing was to discuss the evidence in agreement with both parties before hearing the testimonies of the former directors of TEPCO, which will take place in the coming months.

Around 60 supporters of the plaintiffs gathered in front of the court in the hope that the judgment will be rendered in favor of the plaintiffs and that the former directors will be forced to pay the fine, which, according to lawyer TADANO Tadano, could yet be amended.
