TOKYO: Japan and China said Friday they have agreed that China will gradually resume imports of Japanese fishery products after efforts to monitor the release into the sea of tritium-containing treated water from the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant are strengthened.
Japanese Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio and International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Rafael Grossi agreed in telephone talks the same day to strengthen monitoring of the treated water release.
Kishida told reporters after the talks, “The Japanese side informed (China) of its readiness to conduct additional monitoring, and the Chinese side agreed to steadily resume imports of fishery products that meet the standards.”
The Chinese Foreign Ministry stressed in its announcement that a condition for resuming imports is that China participate in an international monitoring system and be able to confirm the safety of the treated water.
