DUBAI: Tokyo Governor KOIKE Yuriko had a meeting recently with Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of Abu Dhabi’s Environment Agency (EAD), where the two discussed waste management strategies and ways to collaborate on future projects.
Al Dhaheri met with the governor during the agency’s trip to Japan, sharing that Koike’s ‘Zero Emission Tokyo’ strategy aligns with EAD’s goals.
“Our visit to Japan proved highly productive, yielding profound insights from leading sustainability experts,” said Al Dhaheri. “We gained invaluable knowledge in waste reduction, climate mitigation, biotechnology advancements, and marine water conservation. These learnings will be instrumental in implementing innovative solutions in Abu Dhabi, ensuring sustainable environmental outcomes for future generations.”
“This international engagement program is crucial for exchanging knowledge and best practices, directly supporting our strategic priority to enhance EAD’s credibility and foster synergies in key environmental disciplines,” she added.

The EAD delegation also explored Japan’s digital transformation within the government sector in order to understand how the country benefits from its waste management systems. They were impressed by how Japan uses nature-based solutions to reduce the harm of natural disasters.
Aside from meeting Koike, EAD also participated in discussions with senior Japanese executives regarding collaborating on sustainable projects such as climate adaptation, water resources, and waste management.
Last year, Koike visited Abu Dhabi’s Falcon Hospital and Jubail Mangrove Park, where she highlighted EAD’s efforts in preserving the UAE’s mangrove ecosystem. The two countries are committed to continuing their partnership in climate adaptation and sustainability.
