TOKYO: The benchmark Nikkei average gained over 500 points on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Tuesday afternoon, topping the 19,600 line for the first time since March 11 on an intraday basis.
At 1:35 p.m., the Nikkei average of 225 selected issues on the TSE's first section touched a high of 19,607.67, up 564.72 points, or 2.96 percent, from Monday.
Investors hunted a wide range of Tokyo stocks, including retailers that have reported brisk earnings results.
The Nikkei extended its gains in the afternoon, as US stock index futures advanced in off-hours trading on hopes for an early turnaround of the US economy, brokers said. Such hopes grew after US President Donald Trump reportedly said he would make a decision on reopening businesses and put out new social distancing guidelines within several days.
