WASHINGTON: Japan will initially contribute 100 million dollars to a new World Bank fund to help developing countries strengthen their health care systems to deal with infectious diseases including COVID-19.
The establishment of the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Multi-Donor Fund, announced Friday, is designed to assist immediate responses to infectious disease outbreaks by developing nations that cannot raise funds on their own.
The fund will complement the up to 160 billion dollars of financing the World Bank Group will provide over the next 15 months to support measures against COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.
Japan expressed its intention to become the founding donor of the new fund at a Development Committee meeting of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund on Friday.
