
TOKYO: The benchmark Nikkei average briefly shed over 500 points on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Friday afternoon, reflecting fears over the novel coronavirus situation in Japan.
At 12:46 p.m., the Nikkei average of 225 selected issues on the TSE’s first section was down 510.77 points, or 2.29 percent, at 21,828.46.
Selling pressure mounted in response to news reports that the number of novel coronavirus cases confirmed in Tokyo on Friday is expected to reach 400 for the first time, brokers said.
