TOKYO: Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd., has received an order from South Korean company Samsung C & T for an ultra-high voltage DC submarine cable for Abu Dhabi National Oil (ADNOC) in the United Arab Emirates, The Daily Industrial News reported.

Sumitomo Electric’s 400-kilovolt DC cross-linked polyethylene insulation (XLPE) cable, the industry’s highest voltage class, will be delivered for the first ultra-high-voltage DC transmission project in the Middle East.

Construction will start in 2022 and will be completed in 2025. The order is valued at about 20 billion yen.

ADNOC and Abu Dhabi National Energy will be part of a project to jointly establish and implement a special purpose company with Kyushu Electric Power Transmission and Distribution, Cuden International, Korea Electric Power, and France Electric Power.

Sumitomo Electric is known for its high-level technological capabilities and has a track record of successful ultra-high-voltage DC cable orders in Japan and overseas.
