NEW YORK: Nissan Motor Co. said Thursday it will invest 500 million dollars to transform its assembly plant in Canton, Mississippi, to build two new electric vehicle models starting in 2025.

Nissan will expand its production system in the United States as the Japanese automaker aims for 40 percent of its vehicle sales in the country to be fully electric by 2030.

Currently in the United States, Nissan produces only one EV model, the Leaf car assembled at the Smyrna plant in Tennessee.

At the Canton plant, Nissan has been producing gasoline cars, including the Altima sedan and the Titan pickup truck.

With the investment, the Canton plant will newly build one EV model each for the Nissan brand and the Infiniti luxury brand.

“Today’s announcement is the first of several new investments that will drive the EV revolution in the United States,” Nissan Chief Operating Officer Ashwani Gupta said.
