BEIJING: Japan’s Toyota Motor Corp. said Monday that its joint venture plant in Changchun, Jilin Province, northeastern China, started suspending operations the same day.

It is uncertain when the operations will be resumed. Changchun has been under an effective lockdown since Friday due to a resurgence of the novel coronavirus.

The plant makes the RAV4 SUV and other vehicles.

A Toyota official said that the suspension was decided in view of travel restrictions, their impact on suppliers and the safety and security of employees.

Toyota will decide when to resume the operations based mainly on instructions by local authorities, the official also said.

China sticks to a zero-tolerance policy on novel coronavirus infections. In January, Toyota halted operations at its joint venture plant in Tianjin, near Beijing, following a COVID-19 resurgence.
