TOKYO: Suzuki Motor Corp. plans to spend some 150 billion yen to build electric vehicles and batteries in India, people familiar with the company’s plans said Saturday.

The Japanese automaker plans to expand the capacity of its plant in Gujarat, western India, to make electric vehicles starting around 2025. It will also build an electric vehicle battery factory near the plant.

Suzuki, the largest automaker in India, has said it would start selling electric vehicles in Japan and India by 2025.

The company last year announced plans to spend 1 trillion yen on research and development and 1.2 trillion yen on plants and equipment over the five years ending in March 2026. It plans to spend the bulk of the money on electrification efforts.
